Internet, Gaming, Smartphones, and Other Interesting Numbers

The internet, as we know it today, was born in the final years of the 1980s – that was the time when it expanded beyond the military and the universities, moving into the users’ homes.

Mobile internet was born almost a decade later.

It first appeared in Finland, thanks to Finnish cell phone giant Nokia and its Nokia 9000 Communicator device, the second smartphone ever created.

From there on, the evolution of the internet and the devices connected to it accelerated.

First, it was the explosion of the internet businesses, followed by the increase of the connections’ speed, an ever-growing number of portable internet-capable devices, the first smartphone as we know them today, and the total overtaking of communication and entertainment by smartphones for a major portion of the population we see today.

Come to think of it, more time has passed between the launch of the internet and the launch of https://ca.allslotscasino.com than between the latter and the release of the first modern-day smartphone.
But this is just one of the many interesting statistics we plan to show you today.

Internet access

The first internet service providers in Canada appeared in the mid-1990s. Since then, Canada has grown into a major internet consuming country, with around 90% of the population having access to the network (over 33 million users as of this March).

Internet speed

Despite a massive portion of the population being connected, Canada lags behind many other countries – including several Asian ones – when it comes to internet speed. Canadian internet is the second fastest in the Americas, with a 13.1 Mbps average speed in Q4/2015. Globally, this is not enough by far for a top 10 position – South Korea has the fastest average internet speed (28.6 Mbps), and the United States – the 10th on the list – has average speeds of 18.7 Mbps.

Social media

This summer, Facebook released a series of Canada-related statistics, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Confederation. According to these numbers, the country has 23 million local users accessing its services each month, that have created more than 6.5 million groups and 26.8 million events. 8.6 million Canadians are on Instagram.

Smartphone use

As of April 2017, close to 70% of the country’s population, around 25.5 million locals, used a smartphone. By percentage, this puts Canada in the sixth place globally (behind the UAE, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, and Taiwan). By the total number of smartphone users, Canada is the 20th of the world. The first place is (of course) occupied by China, with its more than 715 million smartphone users – which represents around 51% of the population.

Game revenues

Canadians love smartphones, social media, and the internet – and they love to play, too. According to Newzoo, as of June 2017, Canada has generated close to $2 billion in gaming revenues, excluding the amounts spent on online gambling services like EspaceJeux and All Slots Canada. This amount is enough for the eighth place globally.
