Lisa Simone at the Palais Montcalm, Quebec City

Lisa Simone at the Palais Montcalm, Quebec City

By Andrew Greenfield

Lisa Simone steps out of her mother’s shadow and the audience falls in love.

Performing tracks from her latest album, My World, she also paid hommage to her legendary mother, Nina, with beautiful renditions of Ain’t Got No, I Got Life and Work Song.

The crowd in the salle Raoul-Jobin at the Palais Montcalm got to see just how good Simone was was during her 90-minute set, assisted by her jazz trio comprising Hervé Samb, Reggie Washaington, and Sonny Troupé.

Admittedly, not all were there to see Lisa, more so the daughter of Nina.

Simone junior won the spectators over as she went walkabout on a meet a greet during the superb Unconditionally – shaking hands with as many as she could during the song.

Lisa, an effervescent, bundle of energy whose smile let up the room, was having as much fun as we were.

She let it be known that this was her first concert in Quebec and she seemed overcome with emotion toward the end of the show, such was the quality of her performance and the reception from the crowd.

Simone met fans at the end of the show, staying behind to chat to everyone who waited, patiently posing for photos with those who wanted them.

Lisa Simone has her own sound and one she can be immensely proud of.

Come back anytime.
