Man charged in fatal hit and run in Montreal to be kept in jail over weekend

MONTREAL — The man charged in a hit and run that killed a 79-year-old woman in Montreal will spend the weekend behind bars.

Steven Harley Pinnell, 33, is scheduled to have a bail hearing Monday.

He faces charges related to the hit-and-run death of Zelia Araujo and for allegedly stealing the vehicle involved in the incident.

He appeared in a Montreal courtroom on Friday and was represented by a legal-aid lawyer.

Police have said Araujo was hit by a vehicle in the city’s Plateau neighbourhood last Sunday and that the driver didn’t stop.

Pinnell is believed to be from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

An Ontario newspaper reported that Pinnell was arrested on Monday in West Nipissing, Ont., after police received a tip that a vehicle was swerving on the road.

His car was reported stolen in Montreal and the city’s police had a warrant out for his arrest.

Montreal police say Pinnell was transferred to Montreal from Ontario on Thursday.
