QUEBEC – French company Meltdown are arguably the biggest ESports bar franchise around, allowing gaming enthusiasts to take in the latest tournament action, while socialising with likeminded gamers and enjoying a drink or two.
Professional gaming is fast becoming big business. Bookmakers BWIN have reported a 312% increase in betting turnover for ESports tournaments versus last year, displaying what great commercial strides the pro-gaming industry has made over the last few years.
Television channels dedicated to ESports have made their way onto mainstream networks and ESports bars can be found in all major cities across Europe.
At the start of 2016, Meltdown announced that it would be branching outside of Europe for the first time and opening the world’s biggest sports bar in the heart of Quebec.
Meltdown Quebec opened on the 1st October and from all reports, it was a resounding success. Gamers flocked to the bar to take in their new surrounding and for most, sampling for the first time the technological wonders of an ESports bar.
Special guests that evening included League of Legends champion YellOwStaR, popular gamer and commentator RotterdaM and Canada’s own, Terran player MaSa.
Weekly tournament schedules can be found on the Meltdown website, with different types of games being played every night – ranging from Heroes of the Storm, to Overwatch, to NHL 2017.
Along with this branch in Quebec, Meltdown have now expanded their franchise into Toronto, Montreal and across the border in Portland, as the ESports bandwagon continues to pick up speed.
