Review: Laurent Paquin – Déplaire

Review: Laurent Paquin – Déplaire

Review by Andrew Greenfield

Laurent Paquin entertained a sold out crowd at the Salle Albert-Rousseau in Quebec City last Wednesday.
And what a show it was!

Armed with a microphone, some low lighting, a bottle of water, a stool, and his quick-witted, rapid-fire delivery, he had the audience exactly where he wanted them within the first few seconds of walking on stage.

The première of Déplaire (Unfold) contained jokes ranging from the utterly vulgar (penises, sex, and the like) to the (for some) more palatable subjects of family.

Paquin speaks quickly, with one gag leading into the next, so you have to keep up to enjoy this show.

Warning: It is damn funny!

”One of the worst ways to find out that your best buddy sleeps with you girlfriend is when his penis tastes of your girlfriend.”

Paquin used this opening gag to gauge the audience’s reaction.
Almost all of the room laughed, and this clearly drove him on.

Déplaire is the comedian’s fourth one-man-show. He’s now in his mid-forties and has a ton of material, not to mention life experience, to build a show around.

Although wanting to come out of his comfort zone and not come across as a good guy, he does.
This is not a bad thing. Having the audience where you want them demonstrates serious talent, and he has this in spades.

During the 90-miute show, there was no dead time. None whatsoever.

Every gag had its place, Paquin delivering punch after punch as the show progressed.

Laurent Paquin’s Déplaire will be back at the Salle Albert-Rousseau on on March 16 and 17, 2018.

Go see it!
